Toronto is a snowbank. Yes, that is an exaggeration, but only just. We’ve had snow pretty much every day for the past five. I know most of North America has had, um, “interesting” weather this week, so that’s why I’m bringing you something cozy. And it doesn’t get much cozier than a baked potato unless, of course, you stuff it with chili. What I love most about these Chili Stuffed Sweet Potatoes is they give you a warm fuzzy feeling even while you’re making. I don’t know about you, but I think any frigid day without a pot of something delicious simmering on the stove is a missed opportunity. So let’s not let the silver lining of this extreme weather go unclaimed.

I don’t make tomato soup from scratch often. There’s a certain red can I reach for instinctively when I’m hit with a tomato soup craving. And I don’t want to disappoint my tastebuds by giving them something they did not ask for. I have similar feelings about homemade ketchup. There is no way to replicate the manufactured flavor I have so much nostalgia for in my kitchen. But what if I took my beloved tomato soup just far enough off of the beaten track to make something different? I’ve never been one for Valentine’s Day. The concept of the day never sat right with me. If there were ever an aspect of a person’s life one should feel absolutely no shame about, it’s their relationship status. Whether you’re single or attached or somewhere in between, it says very little about you or your worth, in my opinion. So organizing a day to celebrate what is celebrated and praised all year round is ludicrous. Diagnosing the health of your relationship based on the displays of affection (or lack thereof) you received on one day – bonkers! And it’s not even a holiday, you still have to go to work. So I’ve decided Valentine’s Day is not a celebration of love. It’s the celebration of the color pink and frothy feminine desserts. So let’s kick the festivities off with these Raspberry Ricotta Mousse Cakes.

On Instagram, I described today’s Garlic Labneh Flatbread as a clean-out-the-fridge meal. What I failed to mention, is my fridge is not like other people’s fridges. I’m not saying that to be a snob, I am merely pointing it out. It’s not uncommon for me to have garlic confit on hand because my job requires me to make such things. I’m not over-the-top organized by nature, and if I weren’t frequently paid to develop and shoot recipes, I would have such things at my fingertips. So, there’s no reason to feel bad about the state of your fridge in comparison to mine. I generally find myself in a desperate struggle to keep up with the contents of my fridge. So it’s not necessarily a state worthy of coveting. Okay, disclaimer over. Let’s talk about this Garlic Labneh Flatbread with Steak and Blood Oranges.
