December is a party marathon in my family. My sister, father, and partner all have birthdays in December and so do I. Then there’s Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Years’ to contend with. This month is basically a non-stop celebration. But in between flipping latkes, sending birthday wishes, and decking my many halls, I’ve been test-driving my 2020 Christmas Day menu. And rather than do this for my own selfish amusement, I thought I would share every course with you over the next 12 days. Yes, Christmas is 12 days away – I don’t know how that happened either. The holiday season is officially here and it’s a bit of a bummer, to be honest. Here in Toronto, we are in lockdown 2.0, so we’re keeping our Hanukkah and Christmas celebrations small. Like, super small, like, two people and two cats small. And since I’m not entertaining a large crowd at any point this December, I don’t really need to have a vegetarian option on hand. But in spite of my omnivorous household, I felt compelled to offer you my usual veggie holiday option that isn’t a sad afterthought. Before we go any farther, I should tell you there is no meat in these “meatballs”. Yes, I know. Two vegetarian recipes in a row. No, I haven’t converted to a meat-free lifestyle. I’m still rocking the four veggie nights a week while hatching a Christmas plan that will likely include a porterhouse. I wrote extensively about my food philosophy in my last post, so I won’t get into it again today. But what I will do is tell you how freakin’ excellent this Spaghetti with Lentil Meatballs truly is. Yes, really. Yes, I know the name sounds like a sad vegan food joke from a 90s sitcom. But in spite of its descriptive name, this dish is not severely lacking in joy. Quite the opposite. I think it’s quite exuberant and I made a video to prove it to you.

For the past few years now, my partner and I have been eating meat-free four nights a week. It was, admittedly, a struggle for the first few weeks, but I was surprised by how quickly it became second nature. And as more and more of our vegetarian meals achieved “favorite” status, it became a joy. So you see, going meat-free doesn’t have to be a life of virtuous deprivation.
